The betrothal ceremony or the engagement (Le an hoi)

Before the betrothal ceremony happens, both bride and groom or even their parents will ask fortune teller for the best time and date. Both of representatives are responsible for making representations, controlling the ceremony as well as exchanging gifts. On the engagement day, the fiancé family brings gifts to the fiancée family. Both families also choose 5,7 or 9 young and unmarried boys (representing for fiancé) and girls (representing for fiancée) to carry gifts. After that, the young couple prays in front of the fiancée’s family altar to ask for approval of fiancée ancestors and then both families enjoy the party. The days after the engagement ceremony, both families bring the wedding invitations to their relatives, friends and neighbors to invite them to the wedding party of the young couple.

The wedding ceremony (Le cuoi)

On the wedding day, the groom’s family and relatives go to the bride’s house And they carry a lot of gifts wrapped in red papers. These gifts include tea, cakes, fruit, wine and areca leaves and betel nuts. The people who bear these trays are carefully selected; often they are happily married couples. Most ladies and women wear beautiful dresses and Ao dai while men could be in their suits or even Ao dai for men. When stopping in front of the bride’s house, the leading people of the groom’s family enter first and invite the bride's parents to take a sip. By accepting this toast, the bride’s family allows the groom’s family to enter their house


 After the groom’s family introduces themselves and asks permission for their son to marry his bride, the bride’s parents hand their daughter to her groom. Then the couple prays before the altar, ask their ancestors for permission for their marriage, and express their gratitude to both families for raising and supporting them. In order to express their gratitude to their soon-to-be husband or wife, the groom and the bride exchange their wedding rings and receive the gifts from their parents and friends such as golden bracelets, ear rings and even money kept in an envelope.
